Easter egg workshop

We enjoyed a particularly creative coffee morning at the Ukrainian House. A workshop on decorating Easter eggs (pysanky) – in the Ukrainian tradition – was held there especially for the members of IWA Georgia.
For most of the fifteen participants, it was their first time decorating an egg artistically with wax and paint. They were understandably a little daunted by the task. But thanks to the wonderful guidance of our hosts, any doubts quickly vanished and true works of art emerged.
First, we drew a geometric pattern onto the egg with a pencil. We then traced the lines with hot wax. For this, we used a special tool called a kistka. We then dyed the eggs in various colours.
In between, we kept using the wax pen to cover the areas that were to retain their colour. Finally, we removed the layers of wax using a burning candle. Many were surprised at what a magnificently decorated Easter egg they ended up holding in their hands.
And along the way, we also learnt lots of interesting facts about the significance of pysanky and the customs associated with them. It was simply wonderful! A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this workshop.
